  • Alternative Therapies
Have you tried something that is "off the beaten path"? Has it made a difference for you or your child/youth?
Cranial Sacral Therapy, BrainGym, Tomatis Listening Program...there are lots of different interventions but not always a lot of feedback from families about them.
    Please share your experiences here!

  • Conductive Education
Conductive Education (CE) teaches children and adults with physical disabilities such as cerebral palsy, dyspraxia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, stroke and head injury how to overcome their movement difficulties.
Conductive Education is a systematic and holistic approach to develop problem- solving skills through an educational program for people with cerebral palsy and motor disorders. It is not a therapy, but a multidisciplinary system that enhances the child's physical, cognitive, social skills and emotional well being. Conductive Education is not just an exercise, it is "learning to learn" by intensive and repetitive practice, and, the application of various activities necessary for progress. This applies to motor skills, balance, sensory and perceptual functions, emotional development, language and cognitive functions.

  • Dietary Interventions
For some children and youth, modified diets and using supplements makes a difference in behaviours and sometimes response to traditional interventions.
This is a forum to discuss many of these interventions, including the Gluten-Free/Casein-Free Diet (GF/CF), essential fatty acids, magnesium, secretin, and others.
Please share your experience with different interventions - we would love to hear what you've found.

  • Hippotherapy
Hippotherapy or therapeutic riding is a physical and social activity that teaches cooperation with people and animals. It provides an opportunity to share experiences with both disabled and able-bodied riders. Riding is mentally and physically stimulating, enhances alertness and the ability to concentrate, and helps to increase self-awareness and self-confidence.

The rhythmic three-dimensional movement of horseback riding benefits the rider by promoting general physical fitness, normalizing muscle tone, improving balance, reactions and strengthening muscles.

  • Music Therapy / Art Therapy
Music and art are universally appreciated and understood as effective media of expression and communication that exist in all cultures. Music affects us all in many ways, from being highly motivating and stimulating, to calming and relaxing. When used in therapy, music can reach even those resistant to other treatment approaches due to its accessibility, familiarity, feelings of security associated with it, its capacity to express the range of human emotion, as well as the joy of creating and being in music. Percussion and melodic instruments are used in an improvisational approach as they offer an array of sounds for expression. The therapist uses the unique power of music to foster communication and relationship with people living with special needs. Musical improvisation is a fundamental aspect of our interactive approach. New patterns of learning and neurological processes can be created, as well as stimulating sensory, cognitive and emotional development.

  • Occupational Therapy
What is Occupational Therapy? (From OSOT)
"People experience life to the fullest through meaningful occupations - the day to day skills, activities, interactions and experiences that engage us with our environment, our community and the people around us. Our ability to participate in occupations that are important to us promotes health and well-being. The goal of occupational therapy is to positively influence people's health by enabling occupation."

  • Speech/Language Therapy
What does a Speech-Language Pathologist do?
Often taken for granted, the ability to communicate effectively is essential to achieve and maintain quality of life. Speech, language and associated cognitive disorders can adversely affect academic performance, workforce integration, and social interaction. Treatments that speech-language pathologists are uniquely qualified to provide can help individuals with expressive and receptive language, articulation, fluency, voice, resonance and cognitive communication disorders (e.g., memory, organization, problem solving) reach their full communicative potential.
